A pastor on a space station called "Sky Pilot" based on the old Animals song and its history. The opening chapter has our lustrious (he won't be illustrious) protagonist in a bar at 6am on a Monday morning with a shot, a beer, and the last cigar on the station. When you put your robe on & step behind the pulpit and begin to deliver your message, your overwhelming knowledge of God's Word and method of delivery is driven only by your confidence of knowing God is directing your teaching. Speaking for my husband & me only, we were so pleased to find a GREAT PASTOR, we were unconcerned with "size", outside of having a friendly concern for health issues you might be dealing with. Your blessing and love for your Church family and Marie were evident. I pray God will soon lead your way to another loving Church family who is looking for a GREAT PASTOR.Harriette Malcolmhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16263625073831831951noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3934631019755002733.post-88996236840040968202013-03-16T21:27:58.543-05:002013-03-16T21:27:58.543-05:00Paul, this breaks my heart! I do not remember the thought of "fat" entering my mind. If I had to sum up my first impression with one word, it would be "loving." There is not a congregation out there who would not be blessed by you and Marie. You both welcomed me into your hearts from day one, and because of that, I have been blessed.

If someone needs more credentials on why you make such a great pastor, you have them call me. ...Same league... heh... I see what ya did there...

My take on it in general is that the spectacle is implicit. The artist/musician/performer who will impress me is the one who can make any impression at all above and beyond (and maybe even in spite of) the spectacle that's going on around them. I, too, remember a couple of things about those fun summer baseball days when we were so little.
Do you remember how Mr. Lofgren showed us how to run to first base? It was so funny.
I went from bad to worse in hitting the ball from 4th - 6th grade, the years I played. There were exactly 3 times that I did something that surprised the heck outa me. Our team, The Santa Fe Trailblazers, was losing 37-0 to Belinder, if I recall correctly. Somebody got the idea to make me a pitcher. I think that the first pitch I threw was hit straight back into my glove that happened to be in the right place at the right time,in front of my face. The 2nd good thing I did I think was one time hitting a ball all the way to the infield of the other baseball diamond at Santa Fe (or close to it). That was really far for a small kid to hit a baseball. Lastly, I don't remember getting even one hit in the entire 6th grade summer season. But, I did make a game-saving catch. I was playing right field close to center field when an almost line drive was hit down the right field line. I ran as fast as I could & did a flying dive with my arm stretched all the way out. It was just enough to catch the ball right before it hit the ground.
It's amazing how we never forget what happens when we're so young & how a good word or experience can give us so much encouragement.
Amein to your blessings, & those who bless others should surely be blessed.FactsRulehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07060873070822647867noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3934631019755002733.post-39119944773483410212012-06-06T15:12:18.657-05:002012-06-06T15:12:18.657-05:00Excellent words, Paul! We have been experiencing some of this in Mississippi Presbytery as well (only not to the extent of FPC Longview). Our May meeting had us dissolve one church and dismiss 5 churches to EPC. It was a meeting full of sorrow. There were many hurtful things reported in the news. I say this because I do not trust the news to accurately quote people. We have many ministers who are heartbroken, angry, bitter, and in pain over these divisions. Yet, in the midst of it all, our meeting went smoothly. It was the silence that comes when you know you cannot stop something bad from happening and both sides are trying to be 'kind' to the other. In the end, we recognize that even though we split, even though we are human, God is still God, there is only one Body of Christ, and the communion table remains open to all who believe.Heatherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14442479961763456128noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3934631019755002733.post-78685501431932775752012-06-06T12:31:50.664-05:002012-06-06T12:31:50.664-05:00Realized I left out another point. This world is broken and fractured, the level of discourse on many levels is harsh and vicious and disfunctional. If we the church can't manage to find a way to get along and lead the rest of the world to a better place. How in the hell can we expect the world to listen to us?Linda Steelehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03212556826172051971noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3934631019755002733.post-61013420204069355942012-06-06T12:25:10.394-05:002012-06-06T12:25:10.394-05:00Excellent article Paul. What grieves me is the fact that these fights & splits come from people who say they believe and love the institution - yet why must they destroy it to get their own way. We are connectional, our greatest strength AND our greatest weakness is our diversity. (yes I know I say this ad nauseaum). When we fracture into little groups how can we work together for the bigger picture and greater good. I like to point out that Presbyterian Disaster Relief is on the ground immediately helping people. That funds are there and available is because we are broad and diverse. The nearest entity away from the area can immedately begin the helping process. Then the broader church can come in and heal. Both physically and mentally. These are the things that are being lost.Linda Steelehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03212556826172051971noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3934631019755002733.post-71292519135996436932012-04-26T14:34:24.373-05:002012-04-26T14:34:24.373-05:00Upon further review, my comments about "layin...Upon further review, my comments about "laying siege" and "playing out in civil court" were unfounded. The article clearly states First-Springs and Pueblo Presbytery are working it out and coming to accommodation. This is as it should be. This is a much healthier way of separating than some congregations and Presbyteries take and both parties deserve much credit for taking a higher road.

I too appreciate when people comment and discussion follows.
